Ministers of St John the Baptist

Everything we know about the previous vicars and ministers of St John the Baptist, North Baddesley and its links to the medieval Order of St John of Jerusalem.

By combining information about the Baddesley Priory and that about the Minsters of St John the Baptist we have a history reaching back to the 1250’s. The church was there at least 250 years before that, but apart from the record of the Doomsday book, the traces are lost.

The existing church of St John the Baptist was adjacent to the now destroyed Baddesley Priory of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The knights of this Order are also known as ‘The Knights of the Hospitaller’. There has been no formal link between St John the Baptist and the Order since 1540 when the Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII. The church has no relation to the (several) modern organisations claiming to be branches of the Order.

This list of historic ministers and others up to the present day, brings the remarkable history of St John the Baptist home. hope that this list helps with your genealogical research, answers your homework questions, and is a source of joy.

This list is compiled from primary and secondary sources. For the oldest parts we are indebted to Sandra Smith MBE who wrote a ‘North Baddesley: A Short History of the Church and Village’. More recent dates are from the primary source of public knowledge about Clergy – Crockfords Directory. Please use with care – your mileage may vary etc.
