Good things in Lent: Roundup of events

A service for Ash Wednesday

The season of Lent began in @acnbchurch last night with 25 people meeting at All Saints Church, North Baddesley to receive ashes on their forehead. This ancient custom dates back to the first times Christianity came to England. It reminds us all that we come from the earth, and to the earth we will return.

Alpha for Lent starts

This year we are using Alpha as our Lent course. It is a great opportunity to refresh our understanding of the Christian faith or to explore it for the first time. We are excited by the new production of the Alpha course. Our plan is to use this as a Lent course specifically to help our churches understand what Alpha is and how we can best use it to help people find faith.

Starting Lent at Ampfield School

Pupils from Ampfield Church of England Primary School were joined by the team from Church at St Mark, the parish church fo Ampfield to mark the start of Lent with a combined Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday service.

Along with some neat guitar playing, and enthusiastic singing the pupils shared their plans for Lent with each, the church team and other congregation.

Ampfield school is part of the Federation of Ampfield & John Keble Church of England Primary Schools, whose head teacher is Marcus Roe. Revd Victoria, the Vicar of Ampfield, Chilworth and North Baddesley is a Governor. We love having the children come to use this historic church, designed by John Keble who also founded the better known Keble College Oxford… We hope that all the children at our church primary school will be able to aspire to excellence. Who knows perhaps some will find a future academic home at Keble College.

Clergy obliged to start fires…

Judging by @acnbchurch’s social media feed, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is peak ash production day for clergy. Here’s the obligatory picture from Revd Victoria showing last year’s Palm Crosses distributed on Palm Sunday, gathered in and burnt to form the ash used for the imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday.
