Dear [subscriber:firstname | default:reader]

The Sunday of Christ the King is the time the church remembers the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem - as we know to be crucified - but recognised in that moment as the coming king he surely was and is in fulfilment of the prophecy of Zechariah:

Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

This is a strange time to keep the feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday before Advent. We say ‘it is a strange time’ a lot at the moment, and it is good to recognise that.

Yet there is a measure of hope in the reality that over the years thousands upon thousands of our sisters and brothers have also celebrated this feast, and the coming season of Advent in very strange times. I think of the catholic communities in the Nuba mountains, and the Orthodox communities of Syria in those countries civil wars; and indeed our own Church of England community in the 1918 influenza pandemic.

With my thoughts and prayers
